=========================================================================

2. INSTALLATION

1. Start Windows(r) 95/98.
2. It is recommended that you close all other applications before installing
Centipede. Make sure that you have enough hard disk space on your hard
drive.
3. Insert the Centipede CD-ROM game disc into your CD-ROM drive.
4. If auto-play is enabled, the installation process should begin. If
auto-play is not enabled, double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your
Win95/98 desktop. Next, double-click on your CD-ROM icon to install the
game. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Centipede.
5. You now can run Centipede by choosing from the Windows(r) 95/98 taskbar:
Start\Programs\Hasbro Interactive\Centipede.
6. If you are installing the Centipede D3D patch to version 1.0 of the
game, unzip the patch file into the directory where Centipede was
installed.

Note: You must have the Centipede CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive to play.

=========================================================================

3. SELECT VIDEO MODE

The first time Centipede is installed, it will automatically run the Set
Video Mode program that will prompt you to select your video input device
and resolution.

Because Centipede checks the Direct X status of your video card(s) when this
program is run, if you do not have Direct X 5.0 or higher compatible video
drivers, you may not see your video device listed.

The Select Video Mode program allows you to choose your display device
(i.e. your video card) that you want to use to play Centipede. Only
Direct X 5.0 or higher devices with compatible drivers will be displayed
in the list.

Not all video cards support 3D hardware acceleration. If you are uncertain
about whether your video card has 3D hardware acceleration, please refer to
your card's documentation.

Not all video cards support advanced features such as shadows and fog. If
your card is not capable of doing either of these, the Disable Fog and/or
Disable Shadows options will be ignored.

If you run Centipede and experience problems with either shadows or fog, exit
the program and run the Select Video Mode program and turn these features off.

You can also set your display resolution in the Select Video Mode program.
Selecting lower resolutions may increase frame-rate performance, but may
decrease visual quality. Selecting higher resolutions may increase the visual
quality, but may result in a decreased frame-rate.

ANIMATIONS will ONLY play in resolutions that are 16 bit AND are 640x480 or
greater. Animations will not play at any 32 bit resolution, or any resolution
lower than 640x480.

After the initial installation of Centipede, the Set Video Mode program can
also be run again by choosing Select Video Mode from the Windows(r) 95/98
taskbar:

Start\Programs\Hasbro Interactive\Centipede
=========================================================================

4. DIRECT X

The Centipede CD-ROM requires DirectX 5.0 or higher in order to run. If you
do not have DirectX 5.0 (or higher) installed on your computer, click "Yes"
when asked if you would like to install it during the game installation
procedure.

In most cases Direct X 5.0 will install new video and audio drivers for your
system. If you have not updated your drivers for your video or hardware
recently, we strongly suggest that you update your drivers, regardless of
the Direct X 5.0 recommendations during installation.

Although you may not be prompted for a restart after installing Direct X 5.0,
we strongly recommend that you restart your computer anyway.

=========================================================================

5. DIRECT 3D

Centipede supports Microsoft's Direct3D Hardware API. Direct3D provides good
performance and hardware support on MOST video cards. HOWEVER, you may need
to install the most recent video drivers for you video card to get the best
performance.

For information related to specific video cards, see the VIDEO CARDS section
of this file.

=========================================================================

6. VIDEO CARDS

This section contains information regarding specific 3D video cards. To find
information about the video card in your computer, refer to the 3D chipset your
video card is using.

If you don't know what 3D chipset you 3D video card is using, contact your video
card manufacturer. If you are unsure of who manufactures the 3D video card you
are using, you can obtain that information in Windows(r) by doing the following:

1) Bring up the Control Panel by clicking on Start on the task bar, and
then selecting Settings / Control Panel
2) Double click on the System Icon
3) Click on the Device Manager tab
4) Click on the '+' next to Display Adapters
5) You should now see a manufacturer and model description of your 3D
video card

Some video cards have trouble running in 32 bit mode even though that mode is
reported as available in the Select Video Mode program. If you are
experiencing problems running Centipede in 32 bit mode, we suggest you try
16 bit mode.

IMPORTANT NOTE: IN DEVELOPING THE DIRECT 3D VERSION OF CENTIPEDE, WE ENCOUNTERED
A NUMBER OF PROBLEMS WITH MANY 3D VIDEO CARD DRIVERS. HAVING THE MOST UP-TO-DATE
DRIVERS FROM YOUR VIDEO CARD MANUFACTURER IS ESSENTIAL FOR THIS AND ANY OTHER
DIRECT 3D GAME.

IN MANY CASES, REFERENCE DRIVERS FROM THE MANUFACTURER OF 3D CARD'S CHIPSET MAY
BE NEWER, MORE RELIABLE AND GIVE YOU BETTER PERFORMANCE THAN THE DRIVERS PROVIDED
BY YOUR VIDEO CARD MANUFACTURER.

www.3DFX.com

Although D3D is supported for 3Dfx video cards, to get the best performance be
sure to use the Glide version of Centipede. This can be selected by running the

7. LATEST INFORMATION

* Pg. 7 of the game manual (SELECT A GAME SCREEN) states "You can
select a pre-existing game by scrolling up and down the list of saved
games (ranked top to bottom by high score)...". The list of saved
games is not ranked top to bottom by high score as mentioned. There
is a "High Scores" screen that may be accessed via the NEW GAME
SCREEN within a Single-Player Game.

* If you are experiencing audio or video difficulties, it is suggested
that you check your audio or video manufacture's web site for the latest
drivers available.

* When assigning controls under OPTIONS, Player 2 may use those keys
initially assigned to Player 1. If this happens, Player 1 will need to
reassign his controls (and vice versa).

* Centipede automatically saves player's games after each level is completed.
There is no option to manually save your game. Centipede can store up to
10 saved games at one time. A saved game may be deleted to make room for
new games from within the "Select A Game" screen.

* If you experience poor frame rate, you may reduce the in-game screen size
by pressing "SHIFT -". To increase a reduced screen, press "SHIFT +".

* If, for some reason, you find yourself stuck or unable to complete the
level, you may press "SHIFT F10". This will kill your Shooter where it is
and restart you at the beginning of the section.

* You may use your mouse to scroll up and down through menu choices. You
may also press the left mouse button instead of the ENTER key or the
right mouse button instead of the ESC key.

* Although CENTIPEDE can be played with a 6-button game pad, the keyboard,
and/or the mouse, the preferred method of game play is a combination of
keyboard and mouse.

* Note about 3Dfx Voodoo2 driver problem:

If you have a Voodoo Rush card, it will fail to detect your card the first
time you run the game. Selecting 3Dfx as the video mode and running the
game again will fix this.

* Computers with older Pentium processors with the Pentium divide bug may
show strange results when playing network games with other systems that
do not have this bug.
